PPGVideos.com LIVE

I love PPG so much I decided to make a video site showcasing some of the best video. The main focus is for how-to for equipment. How to change parts, how to lube different things and so on. I want it to be a PPG How To site.

Oh.. check this out, you can even embed video onto your own site. ;)

The Video that started it all

Want to know how I got started?  This is one of my top videos that got me started in the sport.  Since I don’t have those huge mountains to play with, I had to go motor.  It’s still a blast, and I will continue to do it.

PS) the weather outside is..  feels about 60° spring is just around the corner.. horray.

Great Job

Weather Watcher Desktop Weather

Have you heard about Weather Bug? Why do they call it BUG? That’s because the have popups and another anoying popups.  Install the latest version of Counterspy and see what it reports weather bug as.  I have also noticed local weather stations also comming out with their own weiather desktop applications… and again more popups, and advertisements.

Is there any weather applications that do not throw advertisements in your way?   YES… I found one.

I found this application called Weather Watcher several months ago. I waited until now to post because I wanted to give this program a very tough test, before recommending it.

This is THE BEST desktop weather application that just works. No popups, no anoying message or alerts (unless you want them), and the program can even change your desktop background.

This is the ONLY program I know of that allows custom maps. I have several sites that I use to get custom winds information. For instance, www.usairnet.com winds aloft. I just setup a custom map, and then click on it as needed.

It’s call Weather Watcher, found here. http://www.singerscreations.com/AboutWeatherWatcher.asp

Great Job Mark, please don’t sell out ;)

Flying Mexico .. My first flight

My first flight with Phil, Susan, Rex, and Laura. What a great time this was. Here are photos of the trip tooo..My PPG Mexico Pictures

Okay, it’s all working

Vroooommm.

Today, after a few months of not being able to fly. She startred.

She took a bit of convincing.

I had an motorcycle battery that I used for my starting my RC airplanes. I decided to charge it last night, and charge the battery to my PPG motor.

Today hooked up a cigarette lighter to the motorcycle battery. I had an adaptor running from the battery with a pair of alegator clips on the other end.

This did not work, as after a few turns, I heard a clicking on the ppg motor. The starter was not getting enough power was my guess.

Okay, let’s try just a regular pair of alligator clips. The motor cranked, but was just barley enough. When I disconnected them from the battery, the wires were VERY hot. The wires were about a 16 or 18 gauge.

Okay, this told me that the wire guage was not think enough for the current being drawn.

So I took some old speaker wire, it was about 8 or 10 gauge. Put some quick loop connectors on it, the kind you crimp on the end of bare wire.

This wire was connected to the battery. It was NOT mounted in the motor, and was only an “extension” to the battery. It was very difficult to work on the battery when mounted to the motor.

After a few cranks it vrooooommmm.. She started.

Once started I let the motor run for a minue or so. Letting it warm up. I check the new sparkplug for coloruation to see if it was lean or rich gas mixture.

Nothing yet.

After about the 3rd startup, the engine was warm, and I needed to adjust the low needle valve. 1) because it i heard a metal tinging sound (means it’s to lean). 2) because the ideal (when throttle off) was a bit higher than I wanted.

This will need to be adjusted sometime in march when I am able to fly again. For those of you who are not from the north. Jan/Feb/March are usually the coldest, and snoweyest months.

So as of now, the motor is disassembled, and in my basement for further tweaking.

In the mean time, I found a better Reserve placement through a new product just released.

Reserve Container

Winter Maintainance

Well, there is only a few more days left until the end of the year. The next 2 months are usually the coldest (Jan & Feb sometimes right up into March)

I finally got around to draining all the fuel out of the gas tank.  However it would not crank over, I think I need to adjust the carbs a bit for the cold air.   I turned the low carb needle about 1 quarter of a turn to the left.  Tried to crank it over, and the battery dies.

So I have to put it back in the shed to charge overnight.

I also dismounted the harness, jbars, and reserve.   I wanted to keep them in a dry and warm area, … the basements.

So I will try again tomorrow to start it up, and run the rest of the gas out of the fuel lines, and carb.  This will also serve me to know when the motor is just about out of gas.  Remember, you should ALWAYS HAVE AN EMERGENCY LANDING SPOT PICKED OUT WHEN FLYING.   Not when there is an emergency.

So this weekend I hope to .(per the manual)

1. Run the rest of the fuel out

2. put 1 Teaspoon of oil in the cylinder head and give a few manual cranks of the prop

3. dismount the propeller

4. Release tension on the pully?  Not exactly sure how to do that, and am off to www.talkppg.com forums to find out how.

Until then..

Blue skies, and warm air ;)
